Slow start in the mornings?

i have an automatic Honda civic, 1988 model which runs on petrol. it doesnt start up the first time in the morning's unless i pump up the speed pedal a few times before starting the engine. This only happens when i start it for the first time in the morning. otherwise, during the rest of the day, it starts up first time every time. does anyone have a suggestion as to what may be causing the problem??
